About the role
For a biopharmaceutical laboratory environment in Leiden, we are looking for an Associate Scientist USP/DSP.
In this role, you will be involved in both upstream processing (USP) and downstream processing (DSP) studies that support the development and optimisation of bioprocesses for therapeutic proteins and other biologics.
You will perform hands-on laboratory work, contribute to data processing and reporting, and act as a practical lead in the lab during studies. Together with the project team, you help complete studies within agreed timelines while contributing to process development, troubleshooting and continuous improvement.
Key responsibilities
- Perform and support USP and DSP experiments, including cell culture, fermentation, protein purification and filtration techniques.
- Support studies focused on the development and optimisation of bioprocesses for biologics.
- Interpret experimental data in the lab and escalate issues in a timely manner.
- Contribute to study documentation, data processing and reporting.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams within the department.
- Act as a practical lead in the laboratory during assigned studies.
- Support process development, troubleshooting and continuous improvement activities.
- Identify improvement opportunities and contribute ideas to improve laboratory processes.
- Maintain laboratory equipment according to applicable procedures.
- Work in compliance with safety, quality and documentation standards.
Requirements
You are proactive, accurate and solution-oriented. You enjoy practical laboratory work and can take ownership of your activities while working closely with project teams and colleagues.
You are able to work under time pressure, manage your own work independently and communicate clearly about progress, results and potential issues.
Your background
- Master’s degree, or a BSc with at least 3 years of relevant experience, in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or a related field.
- Practical experience with USP techniques, such as cell culture or bioreactors.
- Practical experience with DSP techniques, such as ÄKTA systems or UF/DF, is a strong plus.
- Familiarity with GMP and/or GLP environments.
- Experience with data interpretation, documentation and study reporting.
- Strong communication skills.
- Accurate, proactive and solution-oriented working style.
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities under time pressure.
- Good command of English, both written and spoken.
- Dutch language skills are a plus.
